WPC decking buyer guide for Singapore

1. Start with the space, not the colour swatch

Pool surrounds, west-facing roofs, shaded gardens and high-rise balconies stress boards differently. Note sun hours, water exposure, furniture loads and whether the deck must stay removable for estate rules. Match application pages under /applications before locking a board tier.

2. Prefer capped boards for open-air use

For rain-exposed Singapore decks, co-extruded capped boards usually outperform uncapped cores on stain and moisture at the walking surface. Use uncapped only where budget and cover conditions justify it. Details: capped vs uncapped.

3. Hollow vs solid

Hollow boards are lighter and common on residential decks. Solid capped boards add mass and edge durability — useful for pool surrounds and heavy traffic. Ask what joist spacing the manufacturer requires for each.

4. Subframe matters as much as the board

Treated timber joists are common; aluminium joists or pedestals help on roofs and wet zones. A beautiful board on a rotting or uneven subframe is still a failure. See the installation guide.

5. Read warranties with a highlighter

Check what is covered (fade, structural, stain), what voids cover (standing water, wrong fasteners, DIY mods), and whether claims need the original installer. Longer years are not automatically better if exclusions swallow the promise.

6. Colour and heat

Lighter caps stay more comfortable underfoot. Deep espresso looks premium in showrooms and harsh at 2pm on an unshaded terrace. Guidance: heat by colour and colours & sizes.

7. Price with eyes open

8. Questions to ask any supplier

• Is the board capped on three or four sides?
• What joist centres and expansion gaps do you install?
• How do you protect roof membranes or keep balcony traps clear?
• What is in writing for warranty and aftercare?
• Can I see a similar local application (pool / roof / PES)?

9. DIY tiles vs installed boards
